With the support of the European Union and FAO, Moldova’s agricultural statistics are being reformed in accordance with EU requirements

As reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS), March 2 to 6, it hosted a mission to launch a project to consolidate the BNS’s capacity to harmonize agricultural statistics with EU standards, carried out by experts in agricultural statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Rasmiyya Alieva and Irena Oresnik. The mission discussed the problems of Moldova's agricultural statistics and the need to reform them in accordance with EU requirements. The mission concluded with a consultative meeting attended by representatives of the EU Delegation to Moldova, FAO in Moldova, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, the National Agency for Food Safety, the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture, and the National Office of Vine and Wine. During the meeting, they talked about the activities proposed for inclusion in the future project to reform agricultural statistics in line with EU requirements, which is scheduled to start in June this year. The main areas of the project include conducting an Agricultural Integrated Survey, scheduled for 2027, preparatory work for the 2030 general agricultural census, reforming agricultural price statistics in accordance with EU requirements; the development and improvement of economic accounts in agriculture; capacity building in the areas of sampling and statistical analysis, data editing and processing in agricultural statistics; and the development of IT capacity for data collection and processing within the framework of the Agricultural Integrated Survey and the general agricultural census. It should be noted that the Agricultural Integrated Survey is an event being held for the first time in Moldova. This Survey is conducted in EU countries every three years, between rounds of the general agricultural census, and is an important tool for monitoring the development of the agricultural sector. The general agricultural census is a large-scale statistical survey providing comprehensive data on all agricultural holdings and the structure of agriculture, conducted once every 10 years. It is planned that the implementation of the aforementioned project to consolidate the BNS's capacity to bring agricultural statistics into line with EU standards will contribute significantly to the modernization of agricultural statistics in Moldova, improve the quality of statistical data, and strengthen the institutional capacity of the National Bureau of Statistics. These efforts are important both for monitoring the agricultural sector and informing public policy decisions, and for advancing Moldova's European integration. The successful implementation of the project will require concerted efforts by both the BNS and other government agencies that hold the relevant administrative data for compiling agricultural statistics. The project is funded by the European Union and implemented with the support of FAO partners who consistently support reforms in the field of official statistics. // 09.03.2026 – InfoMarket
