Moldovan Railways has resumed container rail transportation and successfully completed a container transfer from a narrow-gauge line to a broad-gauge line
According to a statement from the state-owned enterprise, this demonstrated the national railway infrastructure's ability to ensure efficient freight flows between rail networks. Specifically, eight containers, each weighing 44 tons, were transported from the port of Constanta (Romania) to the port of Giurgiulesti via the narrow-gauge line. In Giurgiulesti, the containers were transferred to broad-gauge flatcars, after which a train was formed for their transportation to Chisinau. Moldovan Railways notes that the resumption of container rail transportation opens up new opportunities and offers numerous advantages for the Moldovan business environment: the ability to transport large volumes of cargo in a single trip, reduced logistics costs over long distances, increased predictability of deliveries, reduced transit times, and improved cargo safety during transportation. At the same time, redirecting some freight flows from national roads to railways helps reduce the volume of heavy freight traffic on roads, reduce wear and tear on road infrastructure, and reduce environmental impacts. The Railways invites economic agents, logistics operators, importers, and exporters to take advantage of container transportation by rail, benefiting from efficient, safe, and sustainable freight transportation solutions.// 18.06.2026 —InfoMarket.
