Moldova’s Cabinet of Ministers approved an intergovernmental agreement with Romania on the creation of a new road border crossing point Leova-Bumbata.
The document was signed by the parties in Bucharest on August 22. As InfoMarket Agency previously reported, in accordance with the provisions of the mentioned agreement, the Leova-Bumbata checkpoint will be opened after the creation of appropriate infrastructure, as well as providing the necessary personnel in accordance with current norms and standards. The creation of the point will make it easier and faster for people and vehicles to cross the border, streamline cross-border traffic and reduce waiting times at other state border checkpoints, which are now more in demand. In addition, the new border crossing point will help improve the capacity of vehicles transiting through Moldova, develop a network of trade routes for cross-border traffic, and improve security at both national and regional levels. Previously, the Moldovan government noted that a pontoon bridge will be built between the cities of Leova (RM) and Bumbata (Romania) across the Prut River. Movement through this checkpoint will be allowed for vehicles with a maximum weight of 40 tons. At the same time, if necessary, the parties will be able to agree on the limitation of transportation of certain goods through this checkpoint. As noted by the government, currently, under the crisis in Ukraine, transit through the territory of Moldova of vehicles and goods from this country to the European Union and back has increased significantly. Large queues of trucks have formed at the Moldovan-Romanian border, especially heavy vehicles transporting cargo, including grain from Ukraine. Thus, the creation of the new border crossing point will redirect the flow of vehicles from other border crossing points and reduce the time of crossing the border through them. // 01.09.2022 – InfoMarket
