Duty on imports of Moldovan goods to the US is raised to 31% as part of the introduction of large-scale duties on imports of goods for 184 countries worldwide
US President Donald Trump, while speaking at the White House, announced that he is imposing duties on US imports of goods at 10%, as well as additional duties for most countries around the world. The restrictions will affect 184 countries around the world. The duties will be 20% for EU countries, 10% for Ukraine, 34% for China and 31% for Moldova. At the same time, Moldova is in the top-28 countries, in respect of which the White House administration has imposed the highest duties, and among the CIS countries it has the highest duty. Kazakhstan is in the 2nd place - 27%. In general, the highest duties are imposed by the U.S. against Cambodia (49%), Vietnam (46%) and Sri Lanka (44%). The list does not include Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Canada and Mexico (against these countries introduced tariffs earlier), Cuba, Somalia and Burkina Faso. The new customs duties will be applied in two stages: a base tariff of 10% will be applied from April 5, and additional tariffs for countries considered “major violators” in international trade with the US - from April 9. Donald Trump proclaimed April 2 as “America's Economic Liberation Day” and said the measures would restore US financial sovereignty. He said that for decades, the US has lowered trade barriers against other countries while those countries “put huge tariffs on our products”. The document, which imposes duties against competitors as well as longtime US allies, the White House leader called it a “declaration of economic independence.” “We will make America great and wealthy again. Our country has been ripped off for over 50 years. That will never happen again,” Trump declared. Washington announced it was retaliatory and allegedly imposed huge duties on US goods in all countries. It is still unclear what metrics were used in the calculation and why they came to the conclusion that, for example, Moldova, applies duties of 61% to American goods. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Moldovan exports to the US in 2024, compared to 2023, increased by 46.4% to $90.2 million, while imports to Moldova from the US increased by 10% to $135.3 million. The US share in Moldovan exports in 2024 amounted to 2.5%. // 03.04.2025 - InfoMarket.
