Moldova is modernizing its customs information systems in line with European standards to facilitate trade and enhance supply chain security

Specifically, Customs Service Director Radu Vrabie and his team paid a working visit to Geneva on January 26–27, where they conducted a high-level mission dedicated to the National Program for the Modernization and Harmonization of Customs Information Systems with the European Union for 2025–2030. The event, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), served as a strategic platform for dialogue on the digitalization of the customs administrations of candidate countries in the context of aligning them with EU customs legislation. The mission reviewed the priorities for developing the Customs Service's IT infrastructure in line with EU customs legislation and the objectives of the national program approved by the government. Discussions focused on strengthening the digital customs architecture, developing systems compatible with European standards, and the phased implementation of modern IT solutions aimed at facilitating trade and enhancing supply chain security. The mission's agenda also included sessions on IT system development, lessons learned from external assistance projects supported by international partners, and aligning customs digitalization goals with Moldova's European integration path. Prospects for continued UNCTAD assistance in developing a new generation of digital customs systems—open and interoperable, adapted to EU requirements—were also explored. Particular attention was paid to planning the implementation phases of new IT solutions, defining institutional responsibilities, strengthening human resources, and ensuring the necessary IT infrastructure to support the modernization process. The participation of the Customs Service's leadership in this mission confirms the institution's commitment to accelerating digitalization, aligning national customs systems with European standards, and actively promoting the achievement of the goals set in the European customs integration process. // 28.01.2026 — InfoMarket.
