Moldova and Romania have signed a memorandum of agreement on the resumption of traffic on the Cantemir-Falciu railroad section

Moldova and Romania have signed a memorandum of agreement on the resumption of traffic on the Cantemir-Falciu railroad section

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, the document was signed by the heads of the Railways of Moldova state enterprise (CFM) and the Romanian National Railway Company CFR in the presence of Moldovan Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea and Romanian State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu. The movement of trains on the Cantemir-Falciu railroad section will resume after 32 years. The resumption of the train traffic on this section will ensure the growth of freight traffic on the railroad and will strengthen Moldova's connectivity with the European transport network. The Cantemir-Falciu railroad section has a strategic position on Moldova's border with the European Union, and its reopening will improve the management of goods flows in the context of efforts to diversify export routes and develop intermodal transportation. To reopen traffic, the rail infrastructure on the territory of both states is being reconstructed, including the rail bridge and the Prut 2 (Moldova) and Falciu (Romania) border stations. “This memorandum is dedicated to opening a new route and anchoring Moldova in the EU rail networks. Moldova, through the Budget +PLUS, has allocated 10 million lei for the rehabilitation of this railroad section. We will have a wide railroad line and European gauge. As soon as possible, we will give economic agents the opportunity to benefit from this project. We fulfill our commitments to citizens by implementing concrete projects. Falciu is one of the projects that will provide improved connectivity,” said Vladimir Bolea. For his part, Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu said that this initiative represents a concrete example of effective cross-border cooperation with direct economic effects and long-term benefits for the region. “This is an important moment for the development of the railroad system between Moldova and Romania. We visited the Falciu-Cantemir bridge, where preparatory works for its opening have started. We are uniting several railway crossings and we want to use them for freight transportation,” Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu said. // 15.04.2025 - InfoMarket.
