Moldova and Romania will take measures to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of rail freight transportation between the countries
This was reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, noting that such decisions were discussed by representatives of the department and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania during an official meeting held in Bucharest. The parties considered specific solutions to strengthen the transport infrastructure between the two countries, which will bring great benefits to the economy and the efficiency of cross-border freight transportation. State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova Mircea Pascaluța and his Romanian counterpart Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu discussed the transition to sustainable rail transport, in particular, the implementation of measures to facilitate the transition of freight transportation from non-ecological modes of transport (road transport) to rail transport. Another topic of discussion was the optimization of costs and routes of rail freight transportation. An assessment of the current tariffs was made and proposals for their optimization at cross-border level were presented in order to stimulate the use of the railway infrastructure between Moldova and Romania. In this regard, it was agreed to establish a permanent working mechanism to ensure effective coordination between the ministries and other institutions concerned. Another important topic addressed during the meeting was the coordinated control at the Ungheni border crossing points, on the Ungheni road bridge, with an emphasis on identifying the practical solutions needed to speed up the process of its commissioning. They also discussed the current state of joint control at the Leova-Bumbăta and Giurgiulesti-Galati border crossing points, as well as the initiation of a common agreement on coordinated control.// 20.02.2025 — InfoMarket
