Moldova’s Cabinet of Ministers approved the intergovernmental agreement between Moldova and Romania on the repair of Giurgiulesti-Galati road bridge across the Prut.
In particular, the matter concerns an intergovernmental agreement on technical, financial, legal and organizational issues regarding the strengthening of the relevant border road bridge across the Prut, which was signed on February 11 in Chisinau. As Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu noted earlier, the border road bridge across the Prut between the settlements of Giurgiulesti andGalati was built in 1949. According to an examination made in 2014, it was revealed an advanced stage of its degradation with possible even greater destruction over time, which could lead to the closure of the Giurgiulesti-Galati border checkpoint, and the nearest border checkpoint is located at a distance of about 65 km, in the Cahul-Oancea region. During the joint meeting of the governments of Moldova and Romania on November 22, 2018 in Bucharest, it was decided to repair the Giurgiulesti-Galati bridge. As a result of these discussions, at the meeting of the Joint Interdepartmental Working Group, which took place in Bucharest on July 23, 2019, this facility was included in the list of priority Moldova-Romania cooperation projects. The Romanian side prepared and submitted to the Government of the Republic of Moldova a draft agreement on technical, financial, legal and organizational aspects related to the strengthening of the Giurgiulesti-Galati border road bridge. The purpose of the agreement is to ensure the strengthening of the border road bridge, which connects the road infrastructure between the two states on the route of the following roads: on the territory of Moldova, the national road M3 Chisinau - Comrat - Giurgiulesti - the border with Romania and through the territory of Romania. As Andrei Spinu noted, this bridge was actually restored at the end of 2021, and traffic on it was resumed in both directions. But it is necessary to complete some more work, and the signing of the mentioned agreement will contribute to this. // 23.02.2022 – InfoMarket
