The port of Giurgiulesti set a new record for cargo transshipment, having handled about 1.4 million tons of cargo in 2021.

The port of Giurgiulesti set a new record for cargo transshipment, having handled about 1.4 million tons of cargo in 2021.

This figure is 30% higher than the previous historical maximum of cargo transshipment, which was registered in 2019. As noted in the message of Danube Logistics, the high demand for cargo transshipment services in the Giurgiulesti port in 2021 followed a difficult 2020 year, which was associated with restrictions on grain exports due to the low harvest in the 2020/21 agricultural season and the pandemic. The volume of cargo transshipments in 2021 increased by 50% compared to 2020. The volume of transshipment of liquid bulk cargo, including petroleum products and vegetable oil, through the port increased by 61% due to a doubling of the volume of transshipped petroleum products compared to 2020. Volume of dry cargo handling, including grain, seeds, crushed stone, coal, petroleum coke and bauxite, increased by 49%, which was largely supported by increased demand for imports of crushed stone for road construction, and grain exports recovered to normal levels in the second half of 2021. General cargo handling increased by 70%, which is mainly the result of the first full year of providing services for handling scrap metal for export. Mathias von Tucher, CEO of Danube Logistics, said that the increase in transshipment volumes through the Giurgiulesti port confirms its important role as a trade portal for Moldovan exporters and importers. “Our investment program is aimed at doubling the capacity for transshipment of dry cargo by building another dock, which will allow receiving sea vessels with a draft of up to 7 meters. The start of work is scheduled for 2022. We are also pleased to note the progress in the implementation of construction projects of our residents to create facilities for the processing and storage of agricultural products. These investments will contribute to the sustainable development of the port's transshipment volumes and the creation of new jobs,” he stressed. Danube Logistics is the general investor and operator of the Giurgiulesti port, the main river port of Moldova with access to the sea. Since 2005, Danube Logistics has made the port of Giurgiulesti one of the most successful ports on the Danube, helping to promote the trading activities of Moldovan companies in international markets. Danube Logistics is wholly owned by the Dutch company Danube Logistics Holding BV. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is the sole ultimate owner of the Danube Logistics group of companies. // 17.01.2022 — InfoMarket
