Moldova is studying the possibility of raising the minimum wage to 5,000 lei.

Raising the minimum wage in the country was discussed on Monday on the platform of the National Commission for Consultation and Collective Bargaining. Representatives of trade union organizations, patronages, business associations, and government agencies spoke about the need to increase the minimum wage. The head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Marcel Spatari, noted that it is necessary to assess the costs of raising the minimum wage to 4,000, 4,500 or 5,000 lei, and what will be the impact of this increase on the budget. According to preliminary estimates, depending on the value agreed upon by the government, employers and trade unions, it may take from 131 million to 560 million lei to ensure the minimum wage for state employees (about 220 thousand people). At the same time, he asked for an assessment of whether small businesses can handle a higher minimum wage. The final decision and the draft government decree on establishing the minimum wage in Moldova for 2023 is planned to be approved in the near future. At present, the minimum wage in the public and real sectors is 3,500 lei. At the same time, a number of other issues were discussed at the meeting. Thus, the Association of Foreign Investors in Moldova (FIA) proposed to take measures to increase the amount of annual expenses incurred by employers for contributions to additional health insurance for employees. Today, the deduction of these expenses is limited to 50% of the MHI contribution (2028 lei), while organizations propose to fix the amount of these deductions at the level of the average salary in the country (9900 lei) or focus on neighboring Romania (400 euros). The FIA also proposes to provide tax exemptions for material support provided by employers to their employees during the cold season, and to abolish existing restrictions on the limit of non-residents' work activity. These and other projects will be reviewed and approved in the future.// 03.10.2022 — InfoMarket.
