About 22.8% of the permanent population of Moldova is elderly people.

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the occasion of the International Day of the Elderly, which is celebrated on October 1, presented statistical data on this category of citizens of the country. At the beginning of 2022, there were 593 thousand citizens over 60 years old in Moldova (22.8% of the total resident population of Moldova). Every third elderly person in Moldova is in the age of 60-64 years, and 10.2% are over 80 years old. At the same time, the share of elderly people in Moldova is constantly growing: the share of elderly people in the 70-74 age group has increased from 12.3% to 20.7% over the last five years. At the same time, the share of people aged 75-79 years dropped from 12.4% to 8.4%, the share of people aged 80-84 years dropped from 7.3% to 6.7%, and the share of those over 85 years from 4.2% to 3.5%. At the beginning of 2022, the population aging rate was 22.8%, which corresponds to a high level of demographic aging. Compared to 2018, it increased by 2.8 p.p. At the same time, women's aging rate is 7.1 p.p. higher than men's: 26.2% vs. 19.1%. As of January 1, 2021, there were 67 men in that age group for every 100 women over 60, and 45 men for every 100 women in the 80-84 age group. NBS notes a decrease in life expectancy for the 60-year-old population between 2017 and 2021 (by 1.7 years for men and by 1.8 years for women), with an increased gap between these rates for men and women. Thus, the average life expectancy for women over 60 is 17.4 years, while for men it is 13.5 years. Most often elderly people in Moldova die from circulatory system diseases (59.8% of deaths), cancer (11.6%) and diseases of the digestive system (4.5%). Older men die more often than women of the same age. It is worth noting that since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the elderly have accounted for 23.9% of infections and 83.5% of deaths. Women of this age are infected with coronavirus more often than men (62.5%) and die of complications (53.3%). //30.09.2022 - InfoMarket.
