Moldova's energy sector is undergoing a major transformation aimed at decarbonizing the economy and promoting renewable energy sources – the Ministry of Energy

State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Carolina Novac stated this while presenting Moldova's experience in energy transition and implementation of energy efficiency projects at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, within the panel discussion “Transition to buildings with almost zero energy consumption”. According to the Energy Ministry, it emphasized the country's continuous efforts to promote energy efficiency measures, highlighting the Sustainable Transition to Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM) project, recently approved by the Parliament, which is testing an innovative financial mechanism through which investments in energy efficiency are reimbursed from the resulting savings. At the same time, the launch of the Sustainable Energy Investment Hub, a platform dedicated to partners in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector, was mentioned. “Energy efficiency programs bring long-term benefits not only by significantly reducing energy bills and dependence on gas imports, but also by improving the living conditions of citizens. Moldova's energy sector is undergoing a major transformation to decarbonize the economy and promote renewable energy. The support of international partners is essential for the success of this transition,” Carolina Novac said. The discussions were also attended by the Minister of Energy of Northern Macedonia, Sanja Bozinovska, who provided a regional perspective on the challenges and solutions needed for the transition to near-zero energy buildings. Among the main challenges addressed was not only the need to mobilize financing for energy efficiency measures, but also the lack of specialized professionals - designers, assessors, builders and technical managers - needed to successfully implement these projects. The discussions also presented the EU Green Deal program with a focus on its implications for the Western Balkans and Moldova in the context of building renovation and energy efficient technologies, vital for a sustainable future and energy security in the region. The COP29 panel emphasized the commitment of Moldova and the Western Balkans region to promote a sustainable energy pathway that supports global climate goals and meets the urgent needs of today. // 14.11.2024 - InfoMarket.
