Moldova's wine sector still accounts for 3% of the country's GDP, despite a 28% decline in wine production in 2021.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Viorel Gherciu said this at the National Conference on the Wine Industry on the topic "Grape harvest 2021: features and capitalization." As noted, the wine sector accounts for 8% of the total exports of Moldova and 2% of the global volume of exported wines. Our country sells wines to 60 countries around the world. The volume of wine produced this year has decreased by 28% compared to 2020. The Minister drew attention to a difficult year due to drought and pandemic. At the same time, Viorel Gherciu emphasized the growth of product quality, as evidenced by the constant prize-winning places at international competitions. Over the past year, our country has won almost 100 medals. The minister also noted that according to statistics, every fourth resident of the country works in the wine industry; in total, the industry employs 150 thousand people. Viorel Gherciu drew attention to the fact that every year the area of vineyards is reduced by 3%, therefore one of the priorities of the government is cutting down old and expanding new vineyards. Viorel Gherciu said that the main priority goals of the government for the development of the grape and wine sector are: opening new sales markets; development of the Sector Development Strategy 2030; an increase in the export of bottled wine; registration of all vineyards and producers in a single profile register. // 24.08.2021- InfoMarket.
