The EU will support Moldova's goals of synchronizing its electricity grids with the continental European grid, which is an important step towards integration into the energy system and the EU market.
This is stated in a joint press statement following the 6th meeting of the EU-Moldova Association Council held in Brussels. As noted, the meeting itself took place against the backdrop of an acute gas crisis in Moldova after Gazprom did not renew its long-term gas contract at the end of September. The EU has supported Moldova throughout this period, in particular by providing expert advice to develop options and scenarios for diversifying supply and energy supply routes. Today, a high-level dialogue on energy issues was launched and in this context, a meeting of high-ranking officials took place, in parallel with the Association Council, to discuss the situation, as well as the immediate and medium-term support of Moldova from the EU. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to provide Moldova with further technical support in overcoming the crisis and stressed the importance of unbundling the supply and distribution of gas and electricity as a means of increasing Moldova's resilience. The EU and Moldova stressed the importance of being resilient to any potential third party attempts to use energy as a geopolitical leverage. The Association Council recalled the importance of continuing the reform of the energy market to enhance competition and transparency in this sector. The EU called on Moldova to ensure that the energy sector reform fully complies with the achievements of the Energy Community and is carried out in line with the EU's Third Energy Package. // 28.10.2021 — InfoMarket
