For 7 years, more than 2.3 million citizens of Moldova have used the visa-free regime to travel to the countries of the Schengen zone.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration recalls that April 28 marks the 7th anniversary of the abolition of the visa regime for short-term trips of Moldovan citizens with biometric passports to the Schengen zone. During this period, more than 2.3 million Moldovan citizens took advantage of the regime, visiting the EU countries 9.1 million times. The MFAEI notes that every year the number of beneficiaries of this regime has grown. So, if in 2014 this regime was used by 157.8 thousand people, then in 2019 - 890.9 thousand people. At the same time, according to the European Border Police and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), of the total number of trips, only about 0.3-0.4% of cases of refusal to enter and 0.5-0.7% of cases of illegal stay were registered annually. Herewith, in 2020 the number of movements of Moldovan citizens in the EU within the framework of the visa-free regime decreased 2.4 times compared to 2019 and amounted to 366.2 thousand, and the number of trips decreased almost threefold - to 793.2 thousand. A similar trend has continued since the beginning of 2021: in January-April, the number of trips decreased by 2.2 times compared to the same period in 2020 - to 198.06 thousand. Meanwhile, last year the number of refusals and illegal stays of Moldovan citizens in the Schengen area increased to 1.1% (8.6 thousand) and, accordingly, to 2.6% (20.4 thousand). Recall that the Schengen area includes 26 of the 27 member states of the European Union (22 member states of the Schengen area and 4 candidate countries for the Schengen area - Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania, which apply the rules of the Schengen agreement), with the exception of Ireland and Switzerland, Iceland , Liechtenstein and Norway. You can find out about the rules for the movement of Moldovan citizens on the territory of European states and the Schengenzons, including during a pandemic, on the MFAEI website. // 28.04.2021 - InfoMarket
