
Moldova ranked 19th among the largest wine producers in the world in 2023 with 1.8 million hectoliters (hl).
At the same time, according to preliminary data, it achieved the highest dynamics of wine production growth compared to the previous year, which amounted to 27%. Such information is contained in the published materials of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). As noted, in particular, the largest wine producers in the world last year were: France with a figure of 48 million hl (+4.4%, compared to the previous year), Italy - 38.3 million hl (-23.2%), Spain - 28.3 million hl (-20.8%), US - 24.3 million hl (+8, 5%), Chile - 11 million hl (-11.4%), Australia - 9.6 million hl (-26.2%), South Africa - 9.3 million hl (-10%), Argentina - 8.8 million hl (-23%), Germany - 8.6 million hl (-3.8%), Portugal – 7.5 million hl (+9.8%), Romania - 4.6 million hl (+21.2%), Russia - 4.5 million hl (-10%), New Zealand - 3.6 million hl (-5.8%), Brazil - 3.6 million hl (+12.1%), China - 3.2 million hl (-33%), Hungary - 2.4 mln hl (-2.1%), Austria - 2.4 mln hl (-6.5%), Georgia - 1.9 mln hl (-3%), Moldova - 1.8 mln hl (+27%), Greece - 1.4 mln hl (-34.4%), Switzerland - 1 mln hl (+1.8%). As noted, the total world wine production in 2023 amounted to 237.3 million hl, which is 9.6% less than a year earlier, when the lowest volume of world wine production since 1961 was recorded. As noted by the International Organization of Viticulture and Wine, a new historic low in world wine production in 2023 was caused by extreme climatic conditions and widespread fungal diseases that severely affected many vineyards around the world.
