The reconstructed section of the Ciumai-Vulcanesti road of the national highway M3 Chisinau-Giurgiulesti was put into operation.
According to the EBRD, this is a 55 km road, the repair of which was financed by the bank as part of a larger road improvement project in Moldova, co-financed by the EBRD (75 million euros), the European Investment Bank (75 million euros) and the European Union (31.2 million euros). The section from Ciumai to Vulcanesti is part of the strategic road M3 Chisinau-Giurgiulesti, connecting corridors IV and IX of the trans-European network, as well as Chisinau with the only port in the country (which does not have direct access to the sea), the Giurgiulesti river port. It is one of Moldova's key infrastructure assets, providing not only trade access to international waters, but also helping to ship grain and fuel to and from neighboring Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports. The EBRD said in a statement that ensuring unhindered access to the port is necessary to further support regional trade and food security. The section of the Ciumai-Vulcanesti road was built in accordance with advanced international standards: drainage systems were improved (to reduce the risk of flooding), modern road markings were applied, fences were installed, etc. The EBRD is the largest institutional investor in Moldova. To date, the bank has invested more than 2 billion euros in 166 projects; 57% of its portfolio is in infrastructure development projects. //25.07.2023 – InfoMarket.
