
The Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau section of the railway is planned to be transferred to the European gauge and electrified in the future.
This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu, presenting information on the development of the railway sector at a government meeting in Ungheni. He recalled that the current Cabinet of Ministers from the first days of work has given priority to the development of the railway industry, approved a new Railway Code, an action plan for the reorganization of the railway sector, etc. Andrei Spinu noted that the authorities have agreed with the French Development Agency (AFD) to allocate a grant of 400 thousand euros to prepare a feasibility study for the implementation of reform and reorganization plans at the level of the Moldovan Railway, analysis of the rail freight market, digitalization of railways and a plan railroad investment that could be financed by the French government. “We hope for the restoration and modernization of the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau section of the railway, which will include the European gauge.
