Moldova plans to use high-capacity battery storage systems to balance the energy system - Ministry of Energy
This was stated by the State Secretary of the Ministry, Constantin Borosan, while presenting the evolution of the electricity market and the benefits of energy storage at the Moldova Electronics Forum 2025, an event dedicated to innovations in electronics, mechanical engineering and energy. According to the Ministry of Energy, the forum brought together representatives of government agencies, investors, technology companies and international partners, providing a platform for dialogue for the sustainable development of these strategic industries. According to Constantin Borosan, the total installed capacity of renewable energy sources in March this year reached 657 MW, and intermittent energy sources create the need to balance the energy system. The optimal solution for balancing is energy storage systems in high-capacity batteries. For this reason, the next auctions for renewable power plants will also include a storage component. The Energy Secretary recalled that the government appointed the Romanian Stock Exchange subsidiary OPCOM as the energy market operator in Moldova, which will launch short-term energy markets - intraday and day-ahead. They will facilitate trading in renewable energy, as well as set price signals for the wholesale and balancing market. Balancing is currently carried out in the Ukrainian energy system, but Moldova needs 246 MW of balancing capacity, of which 72 MW with automatic response (aFRR) and 174 MW with manual response (mFRR). Of this demand, 80 MW can be covered by the existing infrastructure, and the rest requires the creation of new specialized installations. According to the Energy Secretary, the transmission system operator Moldelectrica should hold tenders for the purchase of balancing services. The forum discussed trends and technologies that determine the development of energy storage systems and electronics, infrastructure needs and their integration, market opportunities and industrial applications. // 14.05.2025 – InfoMarket.
