Moldova and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will cooperate to support the growth of the green energy sector and attract new investments to it
This was reported by the press service of the government, noting that the development of the renewable energy sector in Moldova through cooperation with IRENA was discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Dorin Recean and the Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency Francesco La Camera. Dorin Recean noted that over the past 4 years, the government has taken concrete steps to improve Moldova's energy security, and currently two goals have been set in this area: increasing the share of renewable energy in national consumption and energy exports. The head of the Cabinet noted that the capacity for producing renewable energy in Moldova has increased by 8 times, reaching almost 650 MW. "And soon we will add another 165 MW thanks to the recently concluded auction. This means that now, on days with favorable weather conditions, up to 30% of the energy consumed in Moldova comes from renewable sources. "For comparison, in 2020, "green" energy accounted for only 3% of consumption," the Prime Minister said. At the same time, Dorin Recean noted that Moldova needs more transparency to attract investment in the renewable energy sector. "We need more competitiveness and involvement of more external participants in the procurements that have been launched. This fall, we will launch a tender for the construction of wind power plants with energy storage systems. This will allow us to make the network more stable and efficient," the head of government said. For his part, the Director General of IRENA said that the use of renewable energy sources and ensuring the interconnectivity of energy systems play an increasingly important role in ensuring energy security, especially in states affected by the geopolitical context. The parties also emphasized the need to increase energy storage capacities, and the International Renewable Energy Agency demonstrated its openness to supporting large projects of this kind.// 15.04.2025 – InfoMarket.
