Romania is interested in buying the Giurgiulesti port from the EBRD.
This was stated by Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in an interview with Digi24.ro. He noted that the Romanian Transport Minister has already discussed this topic with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the only final beneficiary of the company managing this port. Marcel Ciolacu said that Romania will be one of the most important hubs for Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. "Romania should be logistically prepared for this hub. We have a project, and I also spoke with the President of the European Commission along with the Bulgarian Prime Minister, to take money from the European Commission for Mobility and to build a new bridge, both road and rail, across the Danube, to Giurgiulesti. (...) We must realize that the port of Constanta is of strategic importance at this moment. (...) It is not known what will happen with Odessa, but Moldova has the port of Giurgiulesti and through the Minister of Transport, Romania has already shown interest in it through the EBRD, because the majority shareholder of the Giurgiulesti port is the EBRD, and has stated the readiness of the Romanian state to acquire this port and develop it. We are waiting for an answer," stated Marcel Ciolacu. When asked whether this issue has been discussed with Moldovan officials, he said that negotiations should not be held with Moldovan authorities, as the owner of the Giurgiulesti port is the EBRD and, therefore, negotiations will be held with this bank. Danube Logistics is the general investor and operator of the Giurgiulesti Port, Moldova's main river port with access to the sea. Since 2005, Danube Logistics has turned the Giurgiulesti Port into one of the most successful ports on the Danube, promoting the trade activities of Moldovan companies on international markets. Danube Logistics is fully owned by the Dutch company Danube Logistics Holding BV. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is the sole ultimate owner of Danube Logistics Group. // 29.09.2023 - InfoMarket
