
Moldova in the first quarter of 2022, relative to the same period in 2021, increased imports of energy and electricity in value terms 2.8 times - up to $534.78 million.
These are the data of the Balance of Payments of the country for January-March 2022, released by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM). As noted by the National Bank, under the emergency situation in Ukraine and as a result of sanctions imposed on Russia, global fuel prices have risen sharply. As a result, due to the regional situation, the shock of rising energy prices was felt in Moldova and the value of their imports rose in the first quarter of 2022 by 2.8 times - up to $534.78 million. NBM mentioned that, this change was mainly due to an increase in the value of natural gas imports, which rose in value terms 4.4 times - from $69.87 million in January-March 2021 to $ 308.42 million for the same period in 2022 while the physical volume of gas imports decreased by 8.4% over the same period. The value of diesel imports also increased significantly - by 85.6%, from $82.49 million to $153.09 million, while the physical volume of its imports increased by only 6.7%, compared to the same period of the previous year. The cost of gasoline imports doubled - from $23.26 million to $46.52 million, while the physical volume of its delivery increased by 24.6%. Coal imports rose 2.9 times in value terms - from $1.19 million to $3.5 million. There were no electricity imports from Ukraine in Q1 2022, as in the same period a year earlier. According to NBM data, energy imports under the "Other" section in January-March 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, increased more than 1.5 times - from $15.22 million to $23.25 million. // 01.07.2022 - InfoMarket
