The Constitutional Court approved the initiative to revise the Constitution through a referendum on the issue of Moldova's accession to the EU, which is scheduled to be held on October 20.
This decision was made on Tuesday by the judges of the Constitutional Court, having positively assessed the corresponding request, which was sent to the Constitutional Court by deputies from the ruling Action and Solidarity party. The initiative to hold a referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union was earlier made by the country's President Maia Sandu, proposing to hold it on the same day as the upcoming presidential elections. It is planned that at the referendum citizens will be asked to answer the question: “Are you in favor of Moldova joining the European Union?” If the referendum takes place and the majority of citizens answer positively to the question asked, the preamble of the Constitution of Moldova will be supplemented with 2 new clauses, in which the European identity of the people of Moldova will be confirmed, and integration into the European Union will be declared a strategic goal of the Republic of Moldova. The text of the Constitution will be supplemented by the Section “Integration into the European Union”, concerning accession to the constituent treaties and acts of revision of the constituent treaties of the European Union. “We need unity, we need the participation of every party, public organization, citizen, so that together we can guarantee peace and prosperity to the citizens of Moldova. By uniting for a European Moldova, we will achieve our common goal - for Moldovans to live in peace, dignity and freedom in a strong European country,” Maia Sandu wrote on her social network page. // 16.04.2024 — InfoMarket.
