The Moldovan Constitution to enshrine provisions on Moldova's accession to the European Union.

The Moldovan Constitution to enshrine provisions on Moldova's accession to the European Union.

On 8 April, the Parliamentary Commission for Law, Appointments and Immunity organized consultations to discuss the draft amendments to the Constitution and the procedure for organizing a constitutional referendum on this issue. In particular, according to the draft, the preamble of the Constitution is proposed to be supplemented with two paragraphs, which reaffirm the European identity of the Moldovan people and declare that the integration into the European Union is a strategic goal of Moldova. It is also proposed to supplement the Constitution with a section on "Integration in the European Union" and an article on accession to the EU founding treaties and acts on the revision of the EU founding treaties. If the bill is approved, it will take effect after the Monitorul Oficial publishes the Constitutional Court decision recognizing the referendum results. The head of the parliamentary legal commission, Veronika Rosca, said that in the fall of 2024, a constitutional referendum on amending the Constitution as far as European integration is concerned will be held. The prepared draft amendments are a draft version of the bill. After finalization and agreement on the main parameters, the document will be registered in parliament. Let us remind you that at the initiative of President Maia Sandu, the Parliament adopted amendments to the Electoral Code, allowing to hold a republican referendum simultaneously with parliamentary, presidential or general elections.
