European Council President Charles Michel has called on European leaders to grant candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine.
European Council President said this in his message to European leaders on the eve of the summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels on June 23-24. "Now is the time to acknowledge that the future of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia lies within the EU. I will invite you to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. Of course, these countries will have to fulfill conditions along their European path, notably in the field of the rule of law and the fight against corruption. The people of Ukraine have chosen freedom, democracy and a European future. And now they are fighting for it, and we are right by their side. With war back in Europe, we must strengthen our security and stability, not only within the EU, but also with other European partners across the continent. This idea of a European Political Community can bolster cooperation and make for a safer and more prosperous Europe. And this idea is not a replacement for Enlargement. So we will re-energise the Enlargement process with the Western Balkans and drive forward their integration. The Western Balkans are important to the EU, and the EU is important to the Western Balkans," Charles Michel said in his address. On June 17, the European Commission recommended that Moldova and Ukraine be granted candidate status to join the European Union with the understanding that these countries need to take certain steps, reforms. Georgia, in order to receive such a status, must fulfill certain conditions, as recommended by the European Commission. // 21.06.2022 - InfoMarket
