The European People's Party (EEP), the largest political group in the European Parliament, called for adequate financial support for candidate countries such as Moldova in the next EU multiannual budget

This was announced by Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan, chair of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with Moldova. He noted that on the evening of June 18, the EPP group adopted its position paper on the negotiations on the next EU multiannual budget. "In the document I prepared as the group's budget policy spokesperson, we show that the future budget must support candidate countries such as Moldova and Ukraine in their preparations for EU accession. This requires adequate resources during the pre-accession phase. The future budget must also include a mandatory clause on revision in the event that one of the candidate countries joins during the new financial year," Siegfried Muresan stressed. Earlier, he noted that funding for Moldova would be one of the priorities of the European Union budget for the next seven years, and that it would receive adequate financial assistance during the EU accession process and beyond. Siegfried Muresan stressed that after the European Parliament voted for the largest European aid package in our country's history, amounting to €1.9 billion, he wants to ensure continued support for Moldova on its path to the EU, which is why he included in his report on the EU's budget priorities for 2028-2034 a provision that Moldova, together with Ukraine, will receive adequate financial and political support in the process of joining the EU. The report also states that, in the process of enlargement, the future multiannual budget of the Union should help both candidate countries and states that are already members of the European Union. “We want the EU budget for 2028-2032 to be flexible enough so that we are ready to support Moldova, both through funds allocated for preparation for accession and as a full member state, if accession takes place during this period,” Siegfried Muresan wrote. According to him, thanks to the accession of Moldova, Ukraine, and other states that will meet the conditions, the European Union will strengthen itself as a geopolitical structure in the face of new security challenges. “That is why the enlargement of the European Union and support for candidate countries must be priorities in the future European budget,” Siegfried Muresan emphasized. // 19.06.2025 — InfoMarket.
