The Customs Service reminds that amendments to the Law on granting exemption from payment of import duties to Moldovan citizens returning to the country to their place of residence have entered into force, which provide for the extension of this tax regime for two years - until the end of September 2025. Citizens of Moldova who return to live to Moldova after a long absence, can import 1 passenger car with an engine capacity of up to 2 thousand cubic cm. into the country without paying import duties, service life up to 9 years and customs value up to 400 thousand lei. The vehicle must be free of defects and intended exclusively for personal use. The right of preferential import is granted to adult citizens of Moldova who have a permit for permanent or temporary residence outside Moldova, issued by the authorities of a foreign state, and who can confirm the payment of taxes and fees in the interests of the state in which they are located, and also have a driver’s license. Preferential imports can be taken advantage of by persons who, during the last 48 months from the date of filing the application, have spent a total of at least 36 months outside the territory of Moldova. An individual can request and receive an exemption from import duties only once and only for one transport unit, while the sale, pledge, donation, rent, usufruct, leasing and any other form of transfer of a vehicle into possession or use is prohibited for 3 years years after the vehicle was imported. According to the Customs Service, since October 1, 2022, when the mentioned legislative amendments came into force, 90 citizens who returned to permanent residence in Moldova took advantage of the preferential tax regime. // 16.10.2023 — InfoMarket.
