Moldovan parliament approves the extension of the state of emergency in the country for another 60 days starting from June 4.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean, while speaking at a plenary session of parliament, said that the need to extend the state of emergency in Moldova is due to the unpredictable development of the war in Ukraine, the upcoming Ukrainian counterattack, as well as the growing instability, including in Russia. According to him, there is still a danger of unauthorized missile overflight of Moldova's national airspace. Our country is also exposed to asymmetric threats and a wide range of manifestations of hybrid warfare. In this context, the risk of new cyber attacks on state institutions and national critical infrastructure must also be considered. In this context, Moldova still needs legal mechanisms, limited to a state of emergency, to manage any unpredictable events. "Aggression at our border. Next to us, in 21st century Europe, civilian infrastructure is being bombed, water and sewage networks are being destroyed, the infrastructure needed to provide medicine, food and other essentials. Electricity grids are also affected, which has a direct impact on Moldova. Moreover, when Ukrainian citizens have nothing to eat, are in darkness and without water, there is a risk of increased migration flows into Moldova," Prime Minister Dorin Recean said. Under these conditions, he said, it is important to maintain the government's ability to make immediate decisions to manage emergencies. // 29.05.2023 – InfoMarket
