Moldova hopes to be able to buy the necessary volumes of gas and electricity from Romania and to implement major projects in the field of energy security.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said this in an interview with the Romanian TV channel Digi24. She noted that Moldova does not have a contract for November to supply even the recently reduced amount of electricity from the Moldovan Power Plant, located in the Transnistrian region and owned by the Russian company Inter RAO. Moldova also can no longer buy electricity from Ukraine, as it did until the Ukrainian infrastructure facilities were bombed. "In this situation we are left with the option of buying electricity on the European market, although the prices there are sometimes unaffordable for us. We have the support of Romania, and we want to be able to continue to rely on these purchases of electricity so that we can maintain stability and so that we can also remain part of the free world. We know the price of this freedom, but we still need help and we are very grateful for all the support we have received so far," the Moldovan head of state said. She stressed that this help comes every day. "In Chisinau, we have to find solutions for the next day, to decide from where we will get all the electricity or natural gas. And in recent weeks, we have been able to buy electricity from the Romanian market as well. It is just that when the supply is reduced from somewhere, from the Moldovan state-run power plant, or from the gas supplier Gazprom, even if we have a contract which Gazprom does not fulfill, every day we have new needs and different situations, so in the future we hope that we will be able to buy the necessary volumes of electricity and gas from the Romanian market", Maia Sandu said. She stressed that despite this very difficult period, the Moldovan authorities want to continue investing in the country's energy security, so that in 3-4 years we will not be in the same crisis. "And there is much to discuss here, the reason we turned out to be so vulnerable lays in the fact that the previous governments did not care about the diversification of energy supply sources; they did not invest in renewable energy sources. We, despite these difficulties that we have, despite the very high costs that we pay for energy resources, want to start successfully the diversification of energy supply sources, and we have already launched some important projects that will ensure our energy security in the future. Here we rely on the European Union and other external partners to help us initiate and implement projects. Among other things, we are mainly talking about renewable energy sources. We are also building a high-voltage line that will connect Chisinau and Bucharest. We have a number of important projects that we must implement, I repeat, despite the difficulties we are experiencing today," Maia Sandu said. // 02.11.2022 – InfoMarket
