Iulian Rusu has been appointed the new director of the National Anti-Corruption Center for a 5 -year period.
The corresponding resolution was adopted by the parliament at a meeting on Thursday with the votes of 57 MPs. Iulian Rusu is a lawyer, graduate of the University of Oxford, holds an LL.M. Last year, he was appointed Secretary of State at the Justice Department. He was also previously Executive Director of the Institute for European Policy and Reform and contributed to a number of projects and activities related to the justice and anti-corruption sector. It should be noted that, according to the amendments approved earlier to the Law on the National Anti-Corruption Center (CNA), a new procedure for the appointment and recall of the director of the CNA by the parliament was provided, in particular, the cancellation of CNA director election on a competitive basis. The amendments stipulate that the director of the National Anti-Corruption Center will be appointed by the parliament, on the proposal of at least 20 MPs, by a majority vote of elected MPs, subject to a positive opinion of the legal commission on issues of law, appointments and immunity, for a period of 5 years, without the possibility of appointment for a new term. At the same time, the director of the CNA will be removed from office by the parliament, at the suggestion of at least one third of the elected MPs, by a majority vote of the MPs, if there is a positive opinion of the legal commission. The previous version of the Law on the National Anti-Corruption Center provided that a candidate for the position of CNA director is selected on the basis of a competition organized by the Parliamentary Commission on Law, Appointments and Immunity, with the participation of representatives of civil society or representatives of the scientific community as observers. // 03.02.2022 - InfoMarket
