"We will continue the dialogue with the American side to clarify the details of the new measures and protect the interests of our producers," - Doina Nistor
Commenting on the US decision to introduce differentiated customs tariffs for more than 70 countries, including Moldova, the Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization said that the department would analyze this decision, but assured that the authorities would support Moldovan producers. "We will see how these duties will affect, first of all, the price and competitiveness on the American market, and we will work with the relevant producers so that they either remain competitive or find an alternative market. We will continue the dialogue with the American side to clarify the details of the new measures and protect the interests of our producers. At the same time, we are strengthening trade relations with the European Union, where 3 out of 4 Moldovan exports are received, as well as with the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein)," Doina Nistor noted. Answering journalists' questions about the size of import duties applied by Moldova, Doina Nistor said that they are among the lowest in the region: the average rate for import of agricultural products is no more than 11.7%, and for import of industrial products - 4.3%. Recall that the United States announced a significant increase in customs duties on most imported goods, setting differentiated rates for different countries, while the duty for Moldova will be 31%. According to the government, in 2024, the United States ranked 12th in the list of Moldova's trading partners with a share of 1.79% of the total trade volume, while about 2.5% of Moldovan exports were sent to the United States, and American goods accounted for 1.5% of the total import volume to Moldova. The trade turnover between Moldova and the United States in 2024 increased by 22.1% compared to the previous year and amounted to $225.5 million (exports - $90.2 million, imports - $135.3 million), while exports grew by 46.4%, and imports - by 10%. The trade balance was $45 million in favor of the United States. Moldova exports vermouths and other fresh grape wines, as well as juices to the United States - these products account for 62% of the total supply. The rest of the exports include transport equipment or packaging products, undenatured ethyl alcohol, cyclic alcohols and derivatives, finished clothing, cables, bakery and confectionery products, etc. The main imported products: cars and other motor vehicles, medicines, instruments and apparatus for medicine, surgery, dentistry, orthopedic products, X-ray machines, automatic data processing machines, sunflower seeds, etc. // 03.04.2025 – InfoMarket.
