Government will allocate 50 million lei to compensate farmers affected by drought and extreme heat
This is provided for in a draft government resolution discussed at a meeting of state secretaries this week. The money will be allocated from the National Fund for Agriculture and Rural Development to partially compensate for the losses incurred. Assistance will be provided to corn and sunflower producers whose plantations have been affected by heat and drought. Compensation will be provided on the basis of statements issued by local authorities and only to those farmers whose corn and sunflower crop losses in 2025 ranged from 50% to 100%. The amount of financial assistance is set at 1,800 lei/ha for corn and 1,500 lei/ha for sunflowers in the case of completely (100%) affected areas. For partially damaged areas, the payment will be calculated using a damage coefficient, depending on the percentage of damage. To receive compensation, farmers must submit an application and supporting documents. The application must be submitted in person by the applicant or their legal representative to the territorial division of the National Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture. The explanatory note to the draft notes that 2025 was meteorologically atypical, with a number of dangerous natural phenomena. The most destructive of these was the drought, which caused significant crop losses, especially for corn and sunflowers, thereby seriously affecting the economic activities of farmers. The average air temperature during the season ranged between +20.5°C and +23.9°C, which is 1.2–2.7 degrees above the climatic norm, and according to the State Hydrometeorological Service, such a phenomenon is observed once every 5–15 years. The maximum air temperature rose to +39°C, recorded in Dubasari, Tiraspol, Comrat, Ceadir-Lunga, and Cahul. At the same time, the number of days with a maximum air temperature of ≥35°C in July ranged from 1 to 10 days across most of the country, compared to the climatic norm of 1 day, and in the southern half of the country, this figure reached 11–14 days, which is an extremely serious temperature deviation. A significant precipitation deficit was registered in approximately 80% of the country's agricultural area. By October, the total area of corn affected by drought was about 17,500 hectares, and sunflowers – 19,900 hectares. By that time, the Ministry of Agriculture had received a total of 167 reports of damage to sunflower plantations (85 in the Stefan Voda district, 39 in the Causeni district, 25 in Cahul district, etc.), and 241 reports of corn losses (114 in Causeni district, 79 in Stefan Voda district, etc.). The project is pending approval by the government. // 22.10.2025 – InfoMarket.
