UN agencies will consider additional assistance to support Moldova's drought-affected farmers
This was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea and the new UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Yeşim Oruç. The discussions focused on the support that UN agencies such as FAO, UNDP and IFAD offer to Moldova's farmers, as well as the main challenges faced by the agricultural sector, in particular the damage to farmers due to the severe drought of 2024. During the meeting, Vladimir Bolea stressed the need to increase support for farmers affected by drought, noting the devastating impact of this situation on agricultural production. He reiterated the importance of external assistance, asking Yeşim Oruç to assess the possibility of additional support from UN agencies, especially through initiatives to support affected farmers and by contributing to the Mutual Loss Compensation Fund. Yeşim Oruç expressed interest in the pressing issues faced by Moldova’s agricultural sector and requested detailed information on the main challenges faced by the Ministry of Agriculture and farmers in general. She stressed that she would ask UN agencies to identify solutions and support opportunities, including assessing ways to contribute to the Mutual Fund. In conclusion, the Minister of Agriculture expressed gratitude for the UN’s continuous, long-term assistance, emphasizing the importance of this cooperation for the development of agriculture. For her part, Yeşim Oruç reaffirmed the UN’s openness to close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and assured that she would explore opportunities to support Moldova’s agricultural sector during this difficult period.// 27.09.2024 — InfoMarket.
