UNDP and FAO are implementing the "Emergency Support to Agricultural Producers in Socio-Economic and Energy Crisis" project in Moldova with a budget of 2 million euros.
More than 8,000 Moldovan smallholder farmers affected by the war in Ukraine will receive free seeds, seedlings and animal feed, the UNDP said. They will also be helped to use innovative agricultural technologies to better cope with climate and economic crises. The project will develop a series of informational materials and manuals on proper management of the production process, which will be distributed along with the seeds. In order to ensure knowledge transfer and continuous development of farmers' capacities at the local level, platforms for exchange of experience in the form of farmer field schools will be established. At the same time, women entrepreneurs will be encouraged to implement renewable energy solutions and apply energy efficient technologies. The project will offer 30 grants through UNDP for initiatives in this area. The Moldovan government estimates that the war in Ukraine could cost the economy between 2 and 10% of the country's total GDP, depending on its duration, intensity and territorial coverage. About 70 percent of small farms are already suffering from a lack of resources, means of production, and drought-affected weather conditions. The project "Emergency Support to Agricultural Producers in Socio-Economic and Energy Crises" will be implemented until 2024. The funds are provided by the Austrian Development Agency through the UN Fund "Partnership for Sustainable Development Moldova 2030. // 04.10.2022 - InfoMarket.
