Plums and grains are the most demanded Moldovan agri-food products in the EU and Moldova needs to expand their exports, seek to increase quotas for duty-free supplies - Berlin Economics stated.

This was stated by representatives of this German group of economic consultants, who conducted a study on the applied tariff quotas and the volume of exports of Moldovan agricultural products to the EU and proposed solutions to facilitate its export to new EU markets. The results of the study were presented at a joint meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Viorel Gherciu and representatives of the ministry's departments responsible for policy in the agri-food sector. According to German experts, the creation of added value in cereals and the supply of large quantities of plums to the EU market can bring significant profits to our country. “One of our recommendations is that Moldova's agriculture should be oriented towards processing grain for export, which will ensure higher incomes in the economy. At the same time, we recommend increasing the export quota for Moldovan plums, especially in the fresh consumption category. There is also a high potential for the export of grapes and apples. Currently, most of these products are exported mainly to Russia, but in order to see the upward trend in the value of Moldovan fruits in the EU and achieve long-term competitive advantages, the country's horticultural sector needs diversification, investment and development based on innovation, in accordance with the strict requirements of the European Union,” said Ricardo Giucci the economic policy adviser at Berlin Economics. According to him, in order to promote domestic agricultural products, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry should review the national policy in this sector, identify opportunities to increase exports of recommended agricultural products and encourage agricultural producers to meet the criteria of the Western market. “The priority on the agenda of the Moldovan government is to expand the access of agricultural producers to foreign markets, so we need recommendations for concrete actions. In the light of the analysis, agricultural producers will be informed about new opportunities, and we will be able to create new conditions to facilitate the export of agricultural products,” said Viorel Gherciu. // 17.08.2021 – InfoMarket
