A new data protection system in Moldova, aligned with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), will take effect in August
On Friday, representatives from the private sector, government agencies, European institutions, and leading international experts gathered for the national conference “The New Era of Data Protection: Implementing the GDPR,” dedicated to supporting businesses as they prepare for Moldova’s new data protection system, which complies with the GDPR. The conference provided a platform for dialogue on the practical implications of the new legislation, business responsibilities, and the opportunities arising from closer alignment with European data protection standards. During the event, Victoria Muntean, Director of the National Center for Personal Data Protection, and Martina Spernbauer, Team Leader for Governance at the EU Delegation to Moldova, emphasized the importance of strengthening personal data protection as part of Moldova’s European integration process and the country’s commitment to building a robust digital economy. In her presentation, Tamar Kaldani, Data Protection Commissioner of the Council of Europe, outlined the key components of an effective data protection system, including a modern legal framework, an independent supervisory authority, and a strong culture of compliance. Participants also heard a presentation by Max Schrems, Honorary Chair of the European Center for Digital Rights (NOYB), who shared insights on the evolution of GDPR implementation in Europe, highlighting lessons learned from enforcement practices and the future of digital rights. Participants were briefed on Moldova’s new data protection law and received explanations regarding key obligations for organizations, implementation deadlines, and expectations for the supervisory authority. Throughout the day, participants took part in four thematic panel discussions focused on the practical aspects of GDPR compliance. International experts from Latvia, Malta, Italy, and Slovenia discussed data subjects’ rights, data protection impact assessments, information security, the role of data protection officers, certification mechanisms and codes of conduct, as well as GDPR enforcement, investigations, cross-border cooperation, and the imposition of administrative fines. The conference provided participants with practical recommendations and an opportunity to exchange experiences with leading European data protection experts, helping organizations better understand the steps necessary to achieve compliance with the new legal framework. // 10.07.2026 – InfoMarket.
