The Moldovan Parliament has adopted a declaration on reducing tobacco consumption, promoting the “Smoke-Free Parliament” initiative, and protecting young people's right to a healthy life
The document reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening public policy on the prevention and control of smoking and nicotine addiction in light of rising consumption of tobacco and nicotine products, particularly among young people and minors. At the same time, the declaration emphasizes the need to adopt a national strategy for the prevention and treatment of addictions, as well as the recognition of smoking as a form of addiction and a chronic condition that also requires specialized medical and therapeutic care. Parliamentarians expressed concern about the accelerated growth in the consumption of new tobacco and nicotine products among minors and young people. The signatories of the declaration condemn aggressive marketing practices for these types of products through digital platforms, social media, and attractive flavors and product designs. The declaration emphasizes that state institutions are obligated to promote social norms and moral guidelines for the entire society. In this regard, Parliament warns that raising a healthy generation is incompatible with the state’s tolerance of any form of addiction, and calls on institutions to create conditions for a healthy lifestyle. According to statistics, the number of active smokers in Moldova is approximately 620,000 people. About 25.5% of people over the age of 15 are active smokers. Annually, about 6,000 people die from diseases related to tobacco use or exposure to secondhand smoke. // 29.05.2026 — InfoMarket
