Moldova intends to integrate its energy sector into the Single European Market

This was stated by Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu during a meeting with European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen on the margins of the XI ministerial meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council held in Baku. According to the Energy Ministry, the discussions focused on Moldova's progress in diversifying natural gas supplies, strengthening energy independence and developing the energy sector in the context of increasing renewable energy production and implementing energy efficiency measures with the support of development partners. Dorin Junghietu reiterated Moldova's firm commitment to integrate the energy sector into the Single European Market and thanked the EU for its constant support, including for the quick intervention in overcoming the energy crisis this winter. The Energy Minister said that the prompt intervention of the European partners allowed avoiding a humanitarian crisis on the left bank of the Dniester. “We appreciate the EU's constant support and we are confident that together we will manage to eliminate the dependence on a single energy supplier, as well as to fully integrate the local energy markets into the European market by 2030, which will give Moldova a significant impetus for economic development,” Dorin Junghietu said. The European Commissioner welcomed Moldova's significant progress in fulfilling the EU conditions in the energy sector and confirmed the financial assistance of 250 million euros within the Growth Plan for Moldova. The sides also welcomed the approval of a plan of measures to consolidate the energy independence. The document was elaborated by the Energy Ministry and includes actions to enhance the sustainability of the Moldovan energy sector and eliminate the dependence on the energy resources' supplies from Russia, both in the electricity sector, as well as in the natural gas and oil products sector. This objective was achieved by signing a Memorandum of Intent between the Moldovan government and the European Commission. Dan Jørgensen reiterated the importance of the EU-Moldova High-Level Energy Dialogue, due in Chisinau in June, as another important step in the consolidation of energy relations between Moldova and the EU. // 07.04.2025 - InfoMarket.
