Moldova is interested in further use of the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal to diversify gas sources, and Greek companies are ready to invest in renewable energy projects in Moldova
This was discussed during a meeting between Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu and Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou, who is on a visit to Chisinau. According to the Ministry of Energy, the parties discussed the possibilities of economic cooperation, especially in the energy sector, as well as the possibility of activating the use of the vertical gas transportation corridor. Dorin Junghietu thanked the Greek side for the support provided for the pilot use of the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal and expressed interest in its further use to diversify natural gas sources in Moldova. In April 2024, state-owned Energocom was among the beneficiaries of the first batch of liquefied natural gas delivered to the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal after its commissioning, transporting natural gas via the Vertical Gas Corridor for underground storage in Ukraine. Tasos Chatzivasileiou stated that the LNG terminal, together with the natural gas transportation infrastructure, plays an important role in the geopolitical situation in the region, contributing to strengthening its energy security. In this context, Greece supported the accession of Moldova to the Vertical Gas Corridor, along with Ukraine and Slovakia, in 2024. During the discussions, the parties examined developments in the energy sector and the possibilities for cooperation between states and at company level, in areas such as energy efficiency in buildings, renewable energy, as well as possible assistance in transposing EU regulations. At the same time, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece expressed the interest of Greek companies to invest in Moldova in renewable energy projects, as well as openness to cooperation in the field of hydrogen use. // 02.04.2025 – InfoMarket.
