Moldova announces tender for battery energy storage system (BESS) procurement with US Grant
The Ministry of Energy of Moldova announced this, noting that Moldova is taking another important step to strengthen its energy security by launching the procurement of a modern battery energy storage system (BESS). The tender for the purchase of a 75 MW energy storage system and 22 MW combustion engines was launched by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) within the Moldova Energy Security Project (MESA), implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Energy. This is the first stage of the tender for the procurement and installation of a 30 MW battery component. Potential bidders were informed during an information conference on January 16. The contract is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, with completion scheduled for late September 2026. The storage systems will be installed at CET Nord in Balti, making a significant contribution to grid stability and the integration of renewable energy sources. The procurement aims to improve the reliability of the Moldovan electricity grid, facilitate electricity trade with Romania, Ukraine and the European market, and support the integration of locally produced renewable energy. The energy storage system will also help optimize energy management and help the grid operator, Moldelectrica, maintain grid flexibility and stability in the face of fluctuating electricity demand. The project is being implemented thanks to an $85 million grant from the U.S. government through USAID. The announcement of this funding was made during the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Chisinau in May 2024 and is part of more than $300 million in U.S. assistance dedicated to strengthening Moldova’s energy security under the Moldova Conectat initiative, which is designed to help accelerate Moldova’s physical and market integration with Europe, increase domestic renewable energy production, and strengthen Moldova’s energy independence.// 16.01.2025 — InfoMarket.
