Moldova has made progress in the energy sector and the EU will continue to help it to diversify energy supplies - Janis Mazeiks.

The head of the EU Delegation to Moldova said this in an interview with the state news agency moldpres. According to him, last fall, it was obvious that our country was much better prepared in a situation similar to the crisis of 2021. "In a situation with an unpredictable reduction in gas supplies from Gazprom or a 30% limitation of electricity imports, because Russia bombed the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Moldova managed to provide citizens with gas and electricity. This means that, at this stage, the country is much more resilient than it was a year ago. This is due to the fact that the government prioritizes energy independence and sustainability. At the same time, the European Union and other international donors have provided a lot of expertise in this area in order to increase the country's capacity and be able to buy electricity and natural gas from other sources. As far as gas reserves are concerned, you have real alternatives and all the necessary capacities. The government should consider the best options. We will continue to provide you with the information you need. The experts in gas procurement have the necessary knowledge of the sources of gas procurement," said Janis Mazeiks. He noted that when it comes to the safety of gas storage in Ukraine, the experts said that this source is safe due to the organization of storage capacities. "It's very good that Moldova is diversifying its sources, and that's one of the key issues that you need, because one of the problems of 2021 was that you had no reserves or alternatives. Now you have reserves, some of them are stored in Ukraine; some of them are stored in Romania. As far as Gazprom is concerned, unfortunately, we saw that this concern is not credible because it reduced gas supplies, which was not in line with the contract that was concluded. This is why we have to take into account that Gazprom is an unpredictable cooperation partner, and this is why we have to have alternatives", the head of the EU Delegation in Moldova said. // 31.01.2023 - InfoMarket
