Moldovan citizens will not have to register in the ETIAS system in 2024 for visa-free travel to the European Union with a one-time fee of 7 euros for 3 years.

Moldovan citizens will not have to register in the ETIAS system in 2024 for visa-free travel to the European Union with a one-time fee of 7 euros for 3 years.

This is due to the fact that the EU authorities have again postponed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), now to spring 2025. Following a 2-day meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which took place on October 19-20, EU ministers approved a new timetable for the entry into force of a number of EU information systems, which are used "to fight crime, control borders and manage migration flows". As a result, the new roadmap for implementing the new IT architecture calls for the Entry/Exit system (the electronic database that is supposed to replace manual stamping of passports) to be ready for use in the fall of 2024 and ETIAS in the spring of 2025. No specific month is given. The website https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ notes that the rules for travel to Europe have changed and, starting in mid-2025, some 1.4 billion people from more than 60 visa-free countries must have authorization to enter most European countries. It should be noted that the European Union made a decision in principle back in 2016 to change the border crossing procedures for citizens of those states that have the right to visa-free entry to the EU, and in 2018 the European Parliament approved legislation establishing the parameters of the new system, called ETIAS. However, the dates for the launch of the system were postponed several times, including - due to the need for additional funding and technical legislation, which was adopted only in 2021. At that time, Brussels expected that the ETIAS system could be launched from the beginning of 2022, but the dates had to be postponed repeatedly. Earlier it was reported that after the launch and after the transition period the entry of Moldovan citizens to the EU with a biometric passport will be possible only in case of pre-registration (authorization) in the new system ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). It was last reported that staring 2024, Moldovan citizens, as well as citizens of other countries of the world enjoying visa-free travel to the EU, will need an online EU travel authorization, which will be issued by ETIAS. This new EU requirement will apply on entry to any of the 27 Schengen countries, Bulgaria, Romania or Cyprus. ETIAS will issue online travel authorizations rather than visas. With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, it will be possible to stay in any of 30 European countries for 90 days during any 180-day period. To apply for ETIAS, one must have a passport valid for more than 3 months, provide an email address, fill out an online form and pay a fee of 7 euros. There is only one official ETIAS website: europa.eu/etias. The application form on this website will appear once the system is launched. As InfoMarket previously reported, the ETIAS travel permit will be linked to the traveler's passport and will be valid for up to 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. When a new passport is obtained, a new ETIAS travel authorization will be required. // 23.10.2023 - InfoMarket
