The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the start of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the EU by the end of 2023 and increased financial assistance to our country.
The resolution was adopted with 448 votes in favor, 45 against and 43 abstentions. As the initiator of this resolution, the chairman of the European Parliament delegation to the parliamentary committee on the EU-Moldova association, Siegfried Mureșan, wrote on his page on the social network, the citizens of Moldova want to live in freedom and democracy. “And we want to tell them very clearly: one day Moldova will become a member of the European Union and its citizens will have exactly the same rights and opportunities as all citizens of other EU member states. And that is why, with this resolution, we, the European Parliament, call for the start of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union before the end of this year,” wrote Siegfried Mureșan. According to the European Parliament, the resolution adopted on October 5 notes that the Moldovan government has demonstrated its determination and ability to fulfill the requirements of the European Commission to begin accession negotiations, and Moldova’s accession to the EU will represent a geostrategic investment in a united and strong Europe. The document emphasizes the importance of continuing the reform process on the part of the Moldovan government, not only to achieve the political goal of joining the EU, but, above all, to significantly improve the standard of living of the countries' citizens. The resolution states that the EU and its member states should also increase their financial and technical assistance to Moldova to facilitate its rapid and effective integration into the EU. This includes the rapid release of a new tranche of macro-financial assistance by the European Commission. It is emphasized that Moldova must continue reforms. Reaffirming the fact that EU accession remains a merit-based process requiring the fulfillment of accession criteria, the European Parliament calls on all Moldovan politicians to reach consensus on the most important and urgent reforms in order to further harmonize the country's legislation with EU standards. Members of the European Parliament emphasize that ongoing efforts for sustainable and comprehensive justice reform and the fight against corruption are particularly important, and call on the Moldovan authorities to continue actions on de-oligarization, public finance management reform, the fight against organized crime and public administration reform. Following the start of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022 and received EU candidate country status in June 2022. In April 2023, the European Parliament was already calling for the start of negotiations on Moldova's accession to the EU before the end of 2023, if Moldova implements 9 recommendations of the European Commission, which were called the conditions necessary to start negotiations. //05.10.2023 – InfoMarket.
