The European Union should reconsider its multi-annual financial program in order to provide more assistance to Moldova and Ukraine - Siegfried Muresan.

The chairman of the European Parliament's delegation to the Parliamentary Committee for the EU-Moldova Association said that he presented the relevant proposal to the European Commission as the chief negotiator of the EU budget for 2024. He noted that the budget proposal worth about 190 billion euros includes enough money to finance the current, traditional priorities of the European Union. However, last year saw the emergence of new, unforeseen EU priorities, for which citizens of member states are waiting for solutions and adequate funding. These are more support for entrepreneurs and farmers affected by the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine, more investment in measures to make people safer in the face of external threats, to strengthen the economy, in the green transition and reduce energy dependence on Russia, etc. "We must continue to support Ukraine and Moldova because we can only live in security and stability in all 27 member states if we are surrounded by stable and secure neighboring states. For all these new EU priorities and for any other contingencies that will emerge next year, financial resources are limited in the current budget proposal. That is why my goal as chief EU budget negotiator is to identify new resources to provide sufficient funding for all these priorities. That is why we need more budget flexibility and for this we need to review the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, which is the basis of the EU annual budgets," Siegfried Muresan wrote on his social media page. He said he was waiting for the European Commission's proposal to revise the Multiannual Financial Framework, which should be ready by the end of June. "On the basis of this revision proposal, I will work on a new EU budget for 2024 that will cover all current needs. I will begin to work together with all the specialized committees and all the pro-European political groups to define in detail the budget priorities of the European Parliament. My goal is to pass a strong budget for 2024 in time to cover the financing needs," said Siegfried Muresan. // 08.06.2023 – InfoMarket
