Residents of 5 residential areas in Edinet received improved living conditions thanks to an EU grant as part of a project with a total budget of 4.36 million euros.

As noted in the message of the EU Delegation to Moldova, in addition, new public security services and other modernized, digitized and environmentally friendly public services were opened to them. New public services include water metering, investment in primary education and digitization of information processes for residents. These significant achievements are part of the project “Edinet – a city with a future perspective”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Edinet authorities in partnership with the Municipality of Alba Iulia from Romania. In particular, the new public security service launched includes video surveillance of public spaces. The municipal police, in partnership with the authorities of Edinet, will monitor public order and respond quickly if necessary. To achieve this, 52 CCTV cameras were installed in public places, at pedestrian crossings on the main street of the city and at the entrances to the city, capable of reading vehicle registration data from a distance. These cameras record images on a server managed by the municipal police. Public records will also be available through the city data platform https://smartedinet.md, which is under development. This service was elaborated in parallel with the modernization of street lighting, for which more than 600 thousand euros were spent, and the creation of a city data platform, supported by more than 46 thousand euros - all implemented with financial assistance from the European Union. In addition, the project installed a non-revenue water metering and management system within the municipal water operator. More than 450 smart meters have been installed in the area, serving approximately 500 water customers. These meters measure water consumption and monitor overall consumption to identify and prevent unnecessary water loss in the network. About 360 thousand euros from EU project funds were spent on the development and piloting of this system. Also, with the support of the project, SmartLabs were created and equipped in 4 kindergartens in Edinet: children of preparatory groups will be taught by teachers according to a specially developed program. Each SmartLab is designed and equipped to accommodate groups of up to 15 children at a time. The European Union project allocated about 70 thousand euros for this initiative. In addition, 5 residents' associations received EU grants totaling about 169 thousand euros. The grants were used to modernize the infrastructure of areas adjacent to residential buildings, including efficient landscaping of public spaces, parking, arrangement of functional zones, installation of smart doors, smart lighting and solutions for stormwater management and green areas with automatic irrigation systems. In December 2023, the project launched a number of other modernized and digitized public services, including a sustainable public transport system, smart street lighting, investment in the local education system and others. This fall it is planned to open the “Island of Dreams” in the Vasile Alecsandri Park. The island will be completely modernized and will include areas for walking, recreation, sports, exhibitions, a playground, a cinema, an amphitheater, a pier, etc. The budget of the project “Edinet - a city with a future perspective”, which is being implemented from March 1, 2021 to February 28, 2025, amounts to 4 million 358 thousand 886 euros, of which 4 million 140 thousand 186 euros is a grant from the European Union under the program “Local Authorities: Partnerships for Sustainable Cities 2020” and 218 thousand 700 euros is the contribution of partners. The project began with the development of a General Urban Development Plan, which provides a plan for the territorial development of the city over the next 15 years. // 05.07.2024 - InfoMarket.
