Sweden allocated $1 million 854 thousand for a project to improve the management of the Dniester River.
According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with which the project will be implemented, it will contribute to strengthening the capacity of the Moldovan government in the field of sustainable management of the Dniester River basin at the national and transboundary levels. The project will be implemented in 2022-2027. The legal framework will be improved and a sustainable management plan for the Dniester river basin will be developed. Continuous support will also be provided to the national authorities responsible for water resources management, as well as Moldovan representatives in the joint Moldovan-Ukrainian authorities responsible for the transboundary management of the Dniester River. In addition, the project will take measures that will address some of the environmental issues identified as a result of the social and environmental impact assessment study of the Dniester hydropower complex. The study was developed by a group of independent experts in 2021 at the request of UNDP and an initiative of the Ministry of the Environment with financial support from Sweden. According to the study, the hydropower complex has significantly changed the biodiversity of the Dniester River: several fish species have disappeared, flora has been partially destroyed, and the level of water transparency has increased.// 24.08.2022 — InfoMarket.
