Moldova to receive a $19 million (1.55 billion yen) grant from Japan for the modernization of fire-fighting equipment and the purchase of new special equipment.

This is provided for by a draft grant agreement between the governments of Moldova and Japan, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Moldova at a meeting on Wednesday. The parties intend to sign the agreement soon in order to expand economic cooperation and implement, with Japanese aid, the Project for the modernization of fire-fighting equipment and the purchase of new special equipment for the needs of the Main Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova. According to Interior Minister Pavel Voicu, in particular, it is planned to purchase 10 fire ladders and 9 special vehicles for firefighting and rescue operations using the Japanese grant. It is also stipulated that rescuers and firefighters will undergo special training courses. The grant of 1.55 billion yen (equivalent to $19 million or 15 million euros) will be allocated to Moldova through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The funds will be credited to an account opened for the Moldovan government in one of the Japanese banks.
