EU Ambassador visited Giurgiulești International Free Port
On 2 May 2023 representatives of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova headed by His Excellency Mr. Ambassador Jānis Mažeik visited Giurgiulești International Free Port. Mathias von Tucher, General Director of Danube Logistics, presented the development of cargo transshipments and investments in the port area and emphasized the importance of the EU as trading partner for the port. 63% of last year’s imports to Moldova via the port were delivered from EU countries and 62% of exports were directed to EU countries.
Following the record transshipment volume of 1.8 M tons of cargo in 2022, the general cargo terminal continues to be fully utilized. Therefore, Danube Logistics plans to construct a new universal berth which will provide an additional capacity of about 600,000 tons. A significant portion of the new capacity will be allocated to Moldovan grain trading companies which currently are undertaking construction works of grain storage facilities in the port area.
In addition to operational issues, the framework conditions for investments were discussed and the necessity to continue with the implementation of the justice reform in order to ensure fair access of investors to justice and the rule of law in the Republic of Moldova.
Danube Logistics is the general investor and operator of Giurgiulesti International Free Port, the main sea-river port of the Republic of Moldova. Since 2005 Danube Logistics has developed the port into one of the most successful ports on the Danube River facilitating trade of Moldovan companies with international markets. Danube Logistics SRL is wholly owned by the Dutch company Danube Logistics Holding BV. The sole ultimate owner of the Danube Logistics group of companies is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
