Moldova’s legislation in the field of wine production will be harmonized with European standards

This is stipulated by the relevant amendments to the Law on Vine and Wine, passed by Moldovan Parliament in the second reading. The document was elaborated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry in order to ensure transparency and traceability of the produced and sold wine products, to guarantee the authenticity and high quality of these products, as well as to ensure free competition in this field. The amendments establish rules for defining the main terms used in the wine industry. The document also regulates record keeping and annual filing of vine and wine declarations. The Law on Vine and Wine has been supplemented with provisions concerning traditional designations in the grape and wine sector. Traditional designation means a designation traditionally used to indicate the presence of a grape and wine product with a protected appellation of origin or a protected geographical indication in accordance with national legislation, or a method of production or to indicate ripening, quality, color, place of origin or a specific event related to the history of a product with a protected appellation of origin or a protected geographical indication. Other provisions of the draft law concern the conditions of production of wine products, registration in the Register of wine production of economic entities engaged in wholesale trade in wine products, prohibition of free circulation of wine products by transferring them as wages, bonuses and distribution without payment, except for products intended for advertising purposes. At the same time, the document establishes that labels and packaging held by producers prior to the entry into force of this law may be used for labeling wine products until December 31, 2025. The sale of the respective products is allowed until the exhaustion of their stocks, but not later than August 31, 2027. The amendments and additions to the Law on Vine and Wine will enter into force one month after publication in Monitorul Oficial (the Official Journal of Moldova). // 10.04.2025 - InfoMarket.
