Moldova to toughen legislation in the field of environmental pollution

The government approved at a meeting on Wednesday a draft law on environmental liability in terms of preventing and eliminating environmental damage. According to the draft law, individuals and economic agents, who have an impact on the environment through their activity, will be obliged to compensate for the damage and directly participate in the process of ecological restoration. The aim of the draft is to prevent and remedy damage caused to air, water or soil according to the “polluter pays” principle. The measures proposed in the draft law will reduce negative environmental impacts and mitigate climate change. The measure will also help reduce negative impacts on human health and raise awareness of the seriousness of environmental damage. The draft law has to be approved in the parliament. It is planned to be enacted 2 years after publication in Monitorul Oficial (the Official Journal of Moldova). Until then, the Methodology for the calculation of environmental damage and the Regulation on the establishment and application of forms of financial support are to be elaborated. The government said, citing data from the National Agency for Public Health, that air pollution is responsible for more than 11% of deaths in Moldova. //13.11.2024 - InfoMarket.
